Big Society ‘values’ – a quick update

05Jul10

Thank you to everyone who fed back their comments and thoughts about our response to Government on what we as a network believe that the core values underpinning the work of The Big Society should be.

Interestingly, similar thoughts and concerns were echoed across the network – in particular the need for The Big Society Network to not ‘reinvent the wheel’ and to recognise existing projects and networks; the importance of co-production and co-designing public services (see the Everyday Innovators programme for further information); and concerns about the implications of the lack of access to information / digital technology among the most marginalised in our communities.

We will be feeding back the final version of the document with associated comments to government tomorrow, so if you have any final thoughts that you would like to see included do send them through to laura.hyde@community-links.org by the end of the day today.  (The paper itself is here and you can also update the wiki here)

Tomorrow evening, The Big Society Network will be holding their first public ‘open night’ to encourage people engaged with ‘civil society’ to share their thoughts and ideas with the Big Society team – and we are looking forward to attending and finding out more, and will keep this blog updated with further feedback and thoughts.

In the meantime, we’d like to refer you to a recent blog post by David Wilcox which is an excellent summary of much of the current behind about Big Society.

  1. I think what you’ve been doing here in articulating values and asserting equality is excellent. It’s important that the agenda for a Big Society (or whatever people prefer to call it) is set by society itself and not within a client relationship between society and government.

We’re starting to explore how that could happen with an independent expression of the Big Society in the north of England. We’ve set up a very basic forum at http://grou.ps/bigsocietynorth/home and there’s an initial gathering on 27 July – see http://bsitnorth.eventbrite.com/ – anyone who considers themselves to be in the north is welcome.

    • Julian,

Thanks for the comment and the links. The Big Society needs to be what we as a society want it to be, and we are loving the Big Society in the North network as a way to share ideas and map activity already happening in the area. We’ll help spread the word.

      Laura
